Florent Ghisolfi: “Lucien Favre needed to hear our support.”

Speaking in an interview with L’Équipe, new OGC Nice sporting director Florent Ghisolfi has said that Lucien Favre needed to hear his support after doubts lingered about the Swiss’ managerial position.

Doubts about Favre’s position have swirled for months. Les Aiglons endured a difficult start to the season, giving rise to rumours that Mauricio Pochettino may replace the Swiss manager, who only returned for his second spell at the club in the summer.

Nice then went seven games unbeaten before the international break and were unlucky not to beat Lyon in their final game before the World Cup. Les Gones were gifted a late and harsh penalty, which allowed Alexandre Lacazette to level from the spot. Despite the uptick in form, Nice-Matin reported in mid-November that it was unclear whether Les Aiglons would stick with Favre. The local publication reported that the INEOS ownership had envisaged a managerial change.

However, L’Équipe have since confirmed that Favre will retain his position. Speaking in his first interview since moving from RC Lens, sporting director Florent Ghisolfi said that Favre “needed to hear” the club’s support. Speaking at the club’s mid-season training camp in Marbella, Ghisolfi said, “I went to see him in Switzerland during the break to tell him that we wanted to continue our adventure together. Lucien is our manager, he is under contract (until June 2024) and he has our support. I needed to communicate the board’s position to him, as well as our analysis of the start of the season and our perspective of the club. He needed to hear our support.”
