Christophe Galtier on Jonathan David’s slow start at Lille

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Lille manager Christophe Galtier went into greater detail on his strategy to successfully integrate Jonathan David into Ligue 1, after the Canadian international’s first three games indicated that he was having a slow start to life in France.

“He is young, I have had this discussion with him, he seems impervious to the pressure relating to the size of his transfer, the world of football is what it is. He knows he is well below his level, but he knows that he can count on me and his team-mates to rediscover his form and that comes with work every day. I repeat, he is a player who hasn’t played since March and who had a shortened pre-season because of the situation, awaiting a transfer. He did not play a single friendly. He arrived in deficit with everything, intensity, technique, complicity with the game. He needs sessions and, above all, he needs matches. He has this capacity in certain areas of the pitch to turn and make big differences with his acceleration. And then, he is an excellent finisher. Maybe he missed the chance vs Metz because he was precipitating, but he is very efficient in the box, we see it in training.”
