Auggies collect 16 placewinners at Auggie-Adidas Open

MINNEAPOLIS — Claiming three runner-up honors in Gold division brackets, the Augsburg College wrestling team opened its season with 16 placewinners at its Auggie-Adidas Open, held on Saturday at Si Melby Hall. No team results were kept at the open meet.

  • Defending 125-pound national champion Mike Fuenffinger (SR, Hibbing, Minn.), ranked No. 1 nationally in the preseason Division III national rankings at 125, went 3-1 to finish as runner-up in his weight class. He reached the final with a technical fall, pin and major decision before falling 3-1 to Minnesota State Mankato’s Da’Wayne Robertson in the finals.
  • Matt Hechsel (SR, Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 6 nationally at 197 pounds, finished second in his weight class. He claimed pins in his first two matches and a 13-0, major-decision win in the semifinals, but fell 4-1 to Wisconsin-La Crosse’s No. 5-ranked Eric Twohey in the finals.
  • Rashad Kennedy (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) finished in second place at 149, going 3-1 with a pin. Will Keeter (SR, Twin Falls, Idaho), ranked No. 10 nationally at 149, finished in third place with a 3-1 record.
  • Austin Boniface (SO, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) placed third at 165 pounds, with a major decision and pin in his 3-1 record. Kurt Knutsen (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) finished fourth at 165 with a 2-1 mark.
  • Eric Hensel (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) went 3-1 to place third at 174 pounds.
  • Chad Bartschenfeld (SR, Amery, Wis.), ranked No. 8 nationally at 133, went 2-2 to place fourth.
  • Marcus Hamer (SO, Kimball, Minn.), ranked No. 10 nationally at 141, went 3-1 with pins in his last two matches to finish fifth.
  • Tommy Teigen (SR, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS), ranked No. 10 nationally at 184, rallied from a first-round overtime loss with a major decision and two pins to earn consolation honors. Grant Parker (SO, Onalaska, Wis.) also earned consolation honors at 157, going 3-1 with a pin.
  • Five Auggies earned honors in non-Gold divisions, with runner-up finishes from Gable Frandsen (FY, Ellsworth, Wis.) at 157 Silver, Sebastian Larson (FY, River Falls, Wis.) at 184 Silver, Jordan Reisinger (FY, Tomah, Wis.) at HWT Silver and Dylan Lesar (FY, Cedarburg, Wis.) at 133 Bronze. Dwayne Williams (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) placed sixth at 157 Bronze.
  • As a team, Augsburg is ranked No. 7 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III preseason national poll.

  • 149 Gold: Rashad Kennedy 3-1, 2nd place; Will Keeter 3-1, 3rd place.
  • 149 Silver: Bryce Zdanovec 1-2.
