WWE Hall Of Famer, Pat Patterson recently spoke with Inside The Ropes about creating the legendary Royal Rumble match, revealing Vince thought it was stupid
On pitching the Royal Rumble match:
“We had a big meeting with Vince McMahon and Dick Ebersol of NBC and we are talking about a big show, something special, something that has never been done, so I give my idea to Vince and he says “Alright, tell Dick Ebersol the stupid idea you’ve got.” I said, first of all, it’s not a stupid idea, and then I told him it and he went crazy and said this is unbelievable for television.”
On calling the match:
“These were legal run-ins, it’ll be great and we did it. I’ll never forget that morning, I had it all in my head, how it was going to work and then the day of Vince says “Did you set up your Royal Rumble?” I had to call that by myself and I did and it worked, I love it because it’s very entertaining, it’s not because I did it.”
On Ric Flair winning the Rumble:
“After he won he came backstage he was so happy, he was crying me like a baby. He came into WWE as a big star and he wins the Royal Rumble and he couldn’t believe it. Good for him, Ric Flair is a hell of a guy.”
