Things were looking promising at the start of the season for Lyon’s Karl Toko Ekambi after an upturn in form at the end of the previous campaign. However, with the departure of Lucas Paquetá to West Ham United in the summer, the Cameroonian had an extra creative weight on his shoulders. Inconsistent performances mixed with Lyon’s worst run in Ligue 1 for 30 years has seen his play time limited since the arrival of Laurent Blanc at OL.

European football was where Toko Ekambi shone brightest for Lyon last season, when Les Gones managed to reach the quarter-final stage of the Europa League, his best form coming before the new year, and afterwards his performances were largely only satisfying enough while failing to net past the group stages. With no European competition to showcase his talents this season, it was Ligue 1 where he had to make his mark. Yet, as Peter Bosz’s grip on his job faded with four defeats in a row, so did the form and confidence of the Cameroon international.

Despite this, the 2017 African Cup of Nations winner is currently the third top scorer for Lyon behind Tetê and Alexandre Lacazette with four goals in 15 appearances. He scored a brace in Lyon’s 5-0 win against Angers as well as a deft volley against Monaco, whilst also getting on the scoresheet against Auxerre. Toko Ekambi hasn’t been the big-hitter in Ligue 1 he’s capable of being but there have still been some moments of inspiration to keep hopes of a productive second half of the season alive. He just needs to convince Laurent Blanc that he can provide more consistency.

His 2022 culminated in a World Cup campaign which could be seen as a microcosm of his year as a bright spark in moments for Cameroon during both the loss against Switzerland and the entertaining 3-3 draw with Serbia. However, Toko Ekambi was displaced by the more impactful Vincent Aboubakar for Cameroon’s 1-0 win over Brazil, coming on for the last 25 minutes, a cameo which will be remembered for a skilful move which left 39-year-old Dani Alves on the floor, but not too much else.
