Poppy cultivation or opium production is largely forbidden in India. Opium is widely bred for commercial purposes in India in Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, Mandsaur, Ratlam and Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh and many other places for the pharmaceutical industry.
It can be grown legally only after the issuance of a license. However, the district administration of Bankura in West Bengal has decided to use drones to crack down illegal cultivation and farming of poppy. The Telegraph reported that Bankura along with Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia and Birbhum are the other four districts which are widely prevalent for illicit poppy production.
